Data Warehouses & OLAP

Pré-requis scientifiques

This teaching unit is addressed to students already having practical qualifications on modeling transactional databases and designing operational information systems. Skills and experience on implementing and manipulating databases on DBMS are highly requested. Knowledge on designing and building dashboards is recommended as well.

Objectifs

The data warehousing technology has grown much in scale and reputation in the past few years by the increasing numbers of products, vendors, organizations, and researchers devoted to the subject. In the meantime, the technology is becoming a centerpiece component in the Business Intelligence framework. This teaching unit aims at providing principles and concepts related to the implementation of data warehouses and fundamental techniques for developing On-line Analysis Processing (OLAP) tools as well as issues related to practical use of ad hoc software.

The program of this teaching looks at providing students with skills on building and maintaining data warehouse solutions in the enterprise. It covers training on the philosophy and the fundamental concepts of data warehouses and the position of the technology in the decision-making process. It also addresses the issue of designing a data warehouse schema according to the subject orientation principle. It treats the On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) as a BI reporting tool.

Case studies on data warehouse and OLAP applications are included in the teaching package. In addition, in order to build examples of data warehouses and implement OLAP reporting, practical exercises are proposed through specific training on most common software of the BI market: Cognos (IBM), Business Objects (SAP) and Hyperion (Oracle).
